Performance Food ¿Í Nicolas »çÀÇ ¹è¼Û±â»ç°¡ 2012³â IFDA Æ®·° èÇǿ½ʿ¡¼­ ¿ì½ÂÀ» Â÷ÁöÇß´Ù.  Performance Foodservice, Cash-Wa Distributing, and Nicholas & Company Drivers Seize First Place Honors at the 2012 IFDA Truck Driving Championship - To roars of applause, nine winners individually took to the stage at the awards banquet that was the culmination of the 2012 IFDA Truck Driving Championship, held September 14-16 in Nashville, TN. There were backslaps from team members and hugs from spouses as each winner was announced. Passing through the crowd, winning drivers were congratulated by competitors from other companies in recognition of the significant achievement. "It's a competition, but camaraderie is high," said Tom Zatina, president of McLane Foodservice Distribution and chairman of IFDA. We're using voice picking; we've implemented routing software we found at the IFDA show. We've learned things that have helped us manage our labor, like piece rate and incentive programs for drivers and in the warehouse. We learned about transportation compliance issues and truck leasing. We found vendors for refrigerated trailers and other equipment. By using this technology, distributors are in better position to improve their company's safety training methods, prevent accidents, and save money in litigation costs. This Expo session features IFDA member Al Dibens, senior director of safety, security and business continuity management at Sysco Corporation, who will share his company's experience with camera technology and the successful results. Pan pizzas, thicker than conventional pizzas and cooked in special pans, will be sold at Domino's nearly 5,000 U.S. stores beginning Sept. 24. Among the big chains, Pizza Hut all but owns the pan pizza market, which accounts for a large piece of its business. The cafeteria crackdown will ban deep fryers, make leafy green salads a mandatory option and allow only healthy snacks to be stocked near the cafeteria entrance and at cash registers. At least half of all sandwiches and salads must be made or served with whole grains. Half-size sandwich portions must be available for sale, reported The Associated Press.

The chain, which has almost 850 restaurants in 48 states and one Canadian province, should make good on its long-held goal of 1,000 restaurants by 2013. The TV channel's aim is to offer exclusive content to entertain customers and is akin to a broadcast network with its own news, entertainment and sportscasts localized for cities and even neighborhoods. ¿ù¸¶Æ®´Â ÇâÈÄ 2³â ³»¿¡ ù ¹ø° Á¡Æ÷¸¦ Àεµ¿¡ ¿ÀÇÂÇÒ ¿¹Á¤ÀÌ´Ù.  Walmart expects to open its first retail stores in India in the next two years after the government eased foreign-investment restrictions. The retailer's Asia chief executive stated it will take 12 to 18 months to open retail stores once Walmart gets permission to do so, though only nine of India's 29 states indicated they will welcome foreign retailers, reported The Wall Street Journal. ÀϺ» Æйи®¸¶Æ®´Â ű¹¿¡ÀÇ Á¡Æ÷ ¿ÀÇ¿¡ ¼Óµµ¸¦ ³»°í ÀÖ´Ù.  Japanese c-store operator FamilyMart will accelerate its store openings in Thailand through a new business partnership with Central Retail. Under the tie-up accord, FamilyMart will sell its entire stake in SFM Holdings, which holds FamilyMart's area franchiser Siam FamilyMart, to Central Retail for 7.8 billion yen (about $100 million). FamilyMart revealed the new tie-up will help double the number of convenience stores to 1,500 within five years and 3,000 in a decade, compared with 746 stores as of the end of August, reported The Wall Street Journal. ³Ãµ¿½ÄÇ°Àº 2011³â ¾à 79¾ïºÒ·Î Àü³â ´ëºñ ¾à 0.6% Áõ°¡ÇÏ¿´´Ù.  Frozen meals saw a 0.6% increase in sales in 2011, rising to $7.9 billion, following two years of declines after peaking in 2008 at $8.2 billion, according to Mintel. Weight-management brands are growing faster than non-diet brands. At Nestle, four of five Stouffer's Lean Cuisine varieties gained market share in the 52 weeks that ended Feb. 19, according to Mintel. By comparison, the core Stouffer's brand lost 0.2 percentage points, although it remains the largest frozen-food brand, with a 12.5% share, or $432.5 million in sales, reported Advertising Age.

¿Â¶óÀÎ ½Ä·áÇ°Á¡ Peapod´Â °¡»ó ½´ÆÛ¸¶ÄÏÀ» ±âÂ÷¿ªÀ» ´ë»óÀ¸·Î È®ÀåÇϱâ·Î Çß´Ù.  Launched at a Chicago "L" station last spring, online grocer Peapod is expanding its virtual supermarkets to 17 CTA and Metra stations. The interactive billboards, which allow commuters to scan and buy grocery items on the fly using a free smartphone app, will pop up at nine CTA and eight Metra stations. Virtual shelves will also go up over the next week at dozens of stations in Boston, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, according to a Peapod spokeswoman, reported Chicago Tribune. "I expect single-person households will continue to grow and people will have less money and all of that plays to our strengths," stated the president and CEO of Seiyu and Walmart Japan Holdings. Walmart entered into a partnership with national grocery chain Seiyu 10 years ago, then acquired the company in full four years ago and continues to operate under that name in Japan, reported The Wall Street Journal. The gum brand fell from second to third place as projected 2012 worldwide sales slipped to $3.32 billion. An ECU wine committee is tentatively scheduled to vote on the request Sept. 25, whereupon it will go to the commission for a final decision that could be positive considering the tides of globalization in Europe, reported The Washington Post. The proposed directive appears aimed at boosting productivity at collective farms that have struggled for decades to provide for the country's 24 million people, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. The agricultural producer and trader would "probably grow best" with 40% of its expansion coming from deals, according to its CEO. Cargill plans to spend virtually all of the capital it deploys in the year through May 2013 on organic growth, reported Bloomberg.com.

Meanwhile, ¹Ý¸é¿¡ ·¯½Ã¾Æ´Â ¸ó»êÅä »ê GMO ¿Á¼ö¼ö¿¡ ´ëÇؼ­´Â ¼öÀÔ±ÝÁö¸¦ À¯ÁöÇÏ¿´´Ù.  Russia's consumer-rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor suspended the import of Monsanto's genetically engineered corn following a French study's suggestion the crop might cause cancer. Rospotrebnadzor also claimed the country's Institute of Nutrition was asked to assess the validity of the study, while a Monsanto spokesman stated the impact of the ban would likely be small as Russia is a net exporter of grain and imports little American-grown corn, reported The Wall Street Journal.

ÀεµÀÇ ½Ò ¼öÃâ·® Áß ¾à 600,000Åæ ÀÌ»óÀÌ Ç×±¸ Á¤Ã¼¿Í ¼ö¿ä Áõ´ë·Î Áö¿¬µÇ°í ÀÖ´Ù.  India has pending rice export shipments of more than 600,000 tons due to congestion at ports and strong demand, resulting in large costs of demurrage and shipment delays, reported The Wall Street Journal. This is significant because it reflects India's inability to quickly ship out excess grains at a time when both demand and supply is strong. The pending shipments are almost equivalent to India's actual monthly rice exports.

Researchers analyzed the results of 29 studies including a total of 2,101 participants with dairy intakes ranging from one to more than six servings per day. On average, people assigned to the extra-dairy groups lost 0.3 more pounds than the comparison group, a difference that could have been due to chance, reported Reuters.

The study identifies potential ways of reducing levels of acrylamide, which the National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer regard as a "probable human carcinogen," reported Science Daily.

In the study, four levels of fish oil were evaluated to determine consumer acceptance of fish-oil fortified nutrition bars. The results showed that oat and soy-based nutrition bars fortified with the lowest replacement level (20%) of fish oil did not affect consumer acceptance or purchase intent, reported Science Daily. The company's voluntary recall now also includes 76 varieties of almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, tahini and roasted blanched peanut products, reported Chicago Tribune.

Standard Chartered cut quarterly price forecasts for benchmark sugar prices after concerns receded over supply from Brazil, but warned upside risks remained for 2013. The bank lowered its average sugar price forecasts to 21 U.S. cents/lb. for the third quarter, from 23 cents previously and 22 cents/lb. for the fourth quarter from 24 cents, reported CNBC.com. Fresh apple consumption in China, which produces more than half of the global supply of the fruit, has soared 80% from the 2007-2008 crop year to the crop year ending in June 2012, according to the USDA. That compares with growth of just 36% world-wide in the same period. The surge is shaking up a small corner of the commodities world, the market for apple-juice concentrate in the U.S., and has led to the first-ever futures contract for the product,reported The Wall Street Journal.

The spotted wing drosophila was first detected in Maine last summer in small numbers. But this summer, traps in Monmouth have bagged thousands per week. Fighting the insect could cost farmers who may have to spray pesticides twice a week.

Based on these findings, the researchers recommend that the restaurant and food-service sectors enhance their quality-control protocols for olive oil by including more effective tests, reported Western Farm Press.
