In an attempt to increase customer base and dollar share, restaurateurs' use of social media as a marketing tool is starting to gain alongside other more traditional methods, such as television and newspaper advertising, according to the National Restaurant Association. The study determined that while many operators found traditional methods of communication are effective in increasing revenue, the use of social media is increasingly attracting customers. Some 84% percent of respondents reported posting daily deals on social media sites served as an effective way to increase revenue. Full Story

Drive-through sales, which slowed during the recession were up 3% in 2011, and up 2% in 2010, after falling 1% in 2009, according to The NPD Group. Steakhouses are offering new cuts, retooling menus to add lower prices for frugal diners and replacing traditional rustic decor with a sleeker style to attract a new clientele. LongHorn Steakhouse added two versions of a grilled flat-iron steak for about $13 over the past year, a relatively inexpensive steak that is the most common new cut in restaurants and grocery stores, reported The Wall Street Journal. Centerbrigde Partners LP´Â P.F.Chang¡¯s Chin Bistro Inc.¿¡ ¼Ò¼ÛÀ» Á¦±âÇß´Ù. P.F. Chang's China Bistro Inc. was sued over a $1.1 billion buyout bid by Centerbridge Partners LP that is designed to take the company private. The lawsuit claims that Centerbridge's $51.50-a-share cash offer undervalues the chain and allows P.F. Chang's executives to unfairly see millions of dollars in compensation, reported Bloomberg Businessweek. Full Story

Restaurants are expecting to add 450,000 jobs this summer, up 4.6% from last year, according to projections by the National Restaurant Association. Tesco's Fresh & Easy chain is experimenting with online shopping called ¡°click and collect¡± in an attempt to stem losses at its U.S. business, reported The Financial Times. A trial a version of the program that allows consumers to order online but pick it up in stores is expected to rolled out by the end of this year. The program has been available in the United Kingdom for some time and expanded into grocery just last year. Walmart plans to install solar panels at Massachusetts stores in the next two years, making it the largest user of solar power in the state. Walmart will partner with Greenskies of Connecticut to install the panels at 27 stores in the state, continuing programs started in California. The company aims to be completely powered by renewable energy, estimating the panels will generate between 10% to15% of each store's energy needs, reported The Associated Press. Full Story

The chocolate chips carry the same ingredients, but a cost-cutting change to the manufacturer's cleaning process for the bagging line in April resulted in machines not being checked for dairy residue after handling milk-based chocolate. The food maker lowered prices for its Maxwell House and Yuban coffee by 6% and dropped prices for Gevalia coffee sold in retailers by 10%. Last week, J.M. Two stalwarts in the fair-trade coffee movement are debating a move by a national certifying organization to expand beyond small, farmer-owned cooperatives and allow larger growers to sell their product with a fair trade label. Equal Exchange called on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to sever relations with Fair Trade USA, claiming large growers to use the fair trade label will squeeze out the co-ops. Hostess Brands Inc. is in talks with potential buyers and unions as it tries to stave off liquidation. One source familiar with the negotiations said the outcome of talks was far from certain as any deal to sell the company would hinge on Hostess' success in resolving labor issues. Industry analysts think private-equity firms are likely suitors, while Hostess's brands could also be a target for food companies such as Grupo Bimbo and Flower Foods Inc. For the 52 weeks ended Apr. 14, total U.S. sales of refrigerated reconstituted juice were $1.1 billion, down 6% from the same period in 2010-11, according to Nielsen data published by the Florida Department of Citrus. Tweaking the genes of experimental tomatoes significantly reduced the number of fruits with blossom end rot by as much as 80%, according to a study published in The Plant Journal. Changing the chemistry of a carbohydrate called pectin that adds structure and texture to tomatoes and other fruits can help stave off blossom end rot by increasing the calcium levels, reported The New York Times on the web.
