A statement from McDonald's USA described the ban as "misguided," while industry consultants suggested foodservice outlets would raise their prices in response. The ban is also seen as unnecessary, as soft drink sales are declining. The CEO of Apple-Metro Inc., which owns more than 30 Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bars in the city, claims that soft drink sales are down 20% in the past year alone, reported Crain's New York Business. The six-month-old Fairfield, NJ-based Rickland Orchards' Greek Yogurt Bars are already being sold in Costco, ShopRite and Foodtown. By the end of the summer the bars will also be in Walgreens, Krogers, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club, reported The Star Ledger. Full Story

Marubeni±×·ìÀÌ ¡®Gavilon Group LLC¡¯¸¦ $3.6 billion¿¡ ÀμöÅ°·Î ÇÏ¿´´Ù.Marubeni Corp. will buy Gavilon Group LLC for $3.6 billion. Gavilon is U.S.'s third-biggest grain handler with about 320 million bushels of storage, and the deal targets China's growing demand for corn from North America. The acquisition will make Marubeni one of the world's largest grain traders, adding Gavilon's 30 million tons to bring its global grain handling to 55 million metric tons in the year ending March 2013, reported Reuters. General Mills' Total Plus Omega-3 contains 10% of the daily-recommended amount of ALA, while Kellogg's has a "Protein Plus" line of Special K cereal that offers 10 grams of protein per serving. The machine uses robotic arms and a surgical blade guided by a three-dimensional imaging system that determines the size of each chicken and the location of its skin, meat and bone. A robot capable of make precise cuts to remove the breast meat from chickens is considered very difficult to manufacture and could save millions of dollars in labor costs, poultry industry experts claim, reported The Wall Street Journal. The Chinese government shut down 5,000-plus companies involved in crimes affecting food safety in 2011, according to official figures. The amount of radioactivity in the fish was one-tenth the level the U.S. and Japan consider dangerous, and likely posed no public-health hazard or risk to people who ate the seafood.
