Israel's two largest retailers have held a 64% market share since Shufersal's 2009 purchase of Clubmarket – making this country's retail sector the fifth-most concentrated OECD group of developed economies, reported the Jerusalem Post. The new store is to be located in Salt Lake City and will open in the fourth quarter of this year, though the Trader Joe's spokeswoman would not specify a date. The outlet will cover about 12,700-sq. ft., the average size of a Trader Joe's. Currently, Trader Joe's has 370 outlets in 32 states and is only in the United States. The supermarket coordinates with farmers in Vineland, NJ, who put the produce in motion before 10 a.m. and deliver it to the RLB Food Distributors warehouse around 1 p.m. that same day. Kraft Foods continues to roll out new products as the company prepares to split, such as Planters NUTrition peanut butters. Last year, about 10% of Kraft's revenue came from products less than three years old, up from 8% in 2009. Company executives claim the split will not hinder the development of new products in the future, though they say that the types of innovation may be more globally-minded. For example, Mondelez will be selling chocolate in countries that have very hot weather and limited refrigeration; as such, it is working to develop chocolate that is more heat-resistant, reported Reuters. Clean World Partners and Atlas Disposal Industries will break ground on June 7 on a Sacramento, CA-based organic waste recycling center, designed for converting food waste into energy. When completed, it will be the nation's largest commercial-scale, high-solids anaerobic digestion system. Initially, the transfer station will convert 25 tons of food waste per day, collected by Atlas Disposal from area food processors, restaurants and supermarkets, into renewable natural gas. In 2013, the facility will expand to process 100 tons of waste per day, producing a projected one million diesel gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas and two million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, reported The Sacramento Bee. More than 10,000 individual farming operations each received federal crop insurance premium subsidies in 2011, ranging from $100,000 to more than $1 million while 26 farming operations received subsidies of $1 million or more, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Analyzing Risk Management Agency records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the EWG also found that the bottom 80% of policyholders (389,494 operations) received subsidies worth a little more than $5,000 in 2011. Organic standards are designed to allow the use of most natural substances in organic farming while prohibiting the use of most synthetic substances. In response to the public outcry over its use, the USDA stated in March that it would for the first time offer schools the choice to purchase beef without the filler for the coming 2012 to 2013 school year. Seafood distributor Worldwide Shrimp pleaded guilty in Louisiana to conspiring to mislabel commercially-sold shrimp, according to The Associated Press. From November 2007 to December 2008, Worldwide sent Mexican-caught shrimp to Doran Seafood which would package the shrimp, including illegally affixing "Product of U.S.A." labels, and distribute it under the "Shrimp King" brand, reported Chicago Tribune. Meanwhile, supporters of the bill claim rice and peanut growers still would draw 6% of subsidies while accounting for roughly 3% of the value of six major subsidized crops, reported The Wall Street Journal. The achievement is expected to speed up development of improved varieties of one of the world's most important agricultural commodities. The results should boost international efforts to increase yields, expand areas where corn can be cultivated and produce varieties better equipped to resist pests and disease, reported Science Daily. Simplot also scaled back production at some of its facilities this spring because of a lack of potatoes. Unusually wet weather across much of Manitoba and Atlantic Canada last year led to one of the smallest potato crops in decades, with overall potato production down about 11% last year.
