Some restaurants are negotiating early supply contracts, cutting other costs and raising menu prices to answer rising food costs caused by the nationwide drought. McDonald's already contracted a greater percentage of its food costs for next year than usual, according to its CFO, while Wendy's noted its beef costs were up about 10% recently and expects beef inflation to return to double-digit levels next year. Buffalo Wild Wings stated its price of traditional chicken wings increased roughly 70% per lb. from a year ago and will implement another round of price increases next month after raising some of its menu prices in July, reported The Wall Street Journal. Wendy's reimaged prototype stores helped lift overall same-store sales in North America by 3.2%, according to the CEO in a QSR Magazine report. The chain's 10 prototype restaurants opened in 2011 and sustained an average sales lift greater than 25%, with the first prototypes seeing sustained increases for 12 months, reported Convenience Store News. Darden Restaurants and Publix Super Markets teamed up with several other retailers to create their own digital wallet for customers. The group, known as Merchant Customer Exchange, wants to create a smartphone app that would allow consumers an experience that combines "the convenience of paying at the register with customizable offers," reported Orlando Business Journal. Overall dining spending is up 11% between the first and second quarters of 2012, with fast food (15%) outpacing general restaurant establishments (10%), according to the Chase Freedom Lifestyle Index based on aggregated Chase Freedom cardholder spending data. Among age groups, cardholders aged 45-54 drove the largest restaurant spending increase, at 14%, and the 65-and-over crowd led spending gains in the fast food category with a 17% increase over last quarter. Shoppers who signed up for a $79-a-year Prime account can get it on eligible items for $3.99 in 10 metro areas, including Chicago, New York, and Seattle. EBay, meanwhile, invited select San Francisco customers to sample EBay Now, a shopping app that offers same-day delivery, reported Bloomberg Businessweek. Full Story

Publix shoppers in select markets are getting the chance to test a new digital coupon system. The free service allows customers to choose coupons from a Publix website and save them to an account. Shoppers then redeem the paperless coupons at checkout by entering their 10-digit phone number. Chinese regulators approved Walmart's purchase of a majority stake in Chinese e-commerce company Yihaodian, reported Reuters. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. China Mengniu Dairy has reportedly held talks to acquire raw milk supplier China Modern Dairy Holdings, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. Scientists have found a way to replace up to 50% of fat content in chocolate with fruit juice, according to a study published in Journal of Materials Chemistry. Chemists removed much of the cocoa butter and milk fats that go into chocolate bars, substituting them with tiny droplets of juice. By infusing orange and cranberry juice into milk, dark and white chocolate using what is known as a Pickering emulsion, the chocolatey 'mouth-feel' given by the fatty ingredients is able to still exist, reported Science Daily. Researchers in Korea devised a cheap way of transmitting data from objects to mobile phones when swiped. These so-called "rectennas" are a cross between an antenna and an AC/DC current converter that are printed onto plastic foils using electronic inks. Buyers in the Middle East are also pouring on to the markets on fears that drought will also cut the wheat harvest in the Black Sea region. Sugar Creek Packing purchased the former Really Cool Foods plant in Cambridge City, IN for $13 million during a bankruptcy auction after being the lone bidder. Sugar Creek Packing has five facilities in Ohio and Kansas, and provides an assortment of raw and fully-cooked products for domestic and international distribution. In 2007, Really Cool Foods built the facility with promises of a $100 million investment, but abruptly closed its doors in November 2011, reported Meat & Poultry. U.S. adults with children under 18 years old living in their household are more likely to use their mobile phones for shopping-related activities compared to those without, according to a new survey. Placecast found those with children showed more activity than non-parents across all aspects of digital commerce (mobile and online) - from making purchases via mobile phones to receiving text and e-mail alerts, and taking action on them. The data comes from the third wave of a poll commissioned by Placecast and conducted online by Harris Interactive among 2,262 U.S. adults ages 18 and older earlier this year. Full Story

Previous studies have emphasized an association between diets high in red meat and risk of prostate cancer, but evidence is limited. Attention to cooking methods of red meat, however, shows the risk of prostate cancer may be a result of potent chemical carcinogens formed when meats are cooked at high temperatures, reported Science Daily. Hershey made nutritional claims for its chocolate syrups that do not meet regulatory guidelines, according to FDA. In a warning letter to the company dated Feb. 14, made public on Tuesday, the FDA stated the labels on Hershey's Syrup+Calcium and its Syrup Sugar Free with Vitamin & Mineral Fortification violate federal law. The increase over the past year "seems modest only in the context of exploding farmland values over the past few years," the survey stated, and only 4% of the 205 bankers surveyed expect farmland values to drop this quarter.
