McDonald's plans to test adding more seasonal fruits and vegetables and additional produce to food dishes for its 2013 menu as it tries to entice more health-conscious consumers. The fast-food chain revealed plans to test foods that would increase the number of wholesome choices on its menu. Among the additions being tested are: additional produce side options and grilled chicken choices for Happy Meals; a new McWrap that would feature fresh vegetables and available in three flavors starting at 350 calories; and new breakfast choices, including an egg-white breakfast sandwich on an English muffin, reported The Produce News. Washington, DC-area Matchbox Food Group is expanding with at least half a dozen stores in the works, including one opening this fall in DC and another in Merrifield, VA early next year. Matchbox currently has four locations, including three in the Washington, DC-area and one in Palm Springs, CA, serves pizza and derives one-third of its business from lunch. At one location in DC's Chinatown, the restaurant serves around 7,000 customers a week with about 2,000 of them lunchtime customers, reported The Washington Post. The "McNoodles" comes with vegetables and salad, chicken pieces and either sweet and sour or curry sauce. They'll be available for a limited time starting Thursday. The company says it spent more than a year developing the product, noting that Asian noodles are popular in Austria, reported The Associated Press. Full Story

Millions of Europeans remain at health risk because of the persistently high trans fatty acid content of certain fast and convenience foods, indicates research published in the online journal BMJ. Few European countries have imposed any legal limits, meaning that it is possible to buy certain packaged and restaurant foods which still contain very high levels. Only a few countries -- Denmark, Austria, Switzerland and Iceland have legally forced the industry to limit the amount of TFA used in foods to 2% of the total fat, reported Science Daily. Full Story

CBL & Associates Properties is adding a total of 15 to 20 restaurants a year to the 165 malls it owns across the U.S. The share of Chipotle's new restaurants moving into existing spaces increased to about 70% during the past three years. Starbucks this week begins rolling out a single cup brewing machine, the Verismo System, which will brew coffee, lattes and espresso in a single machine. California's ban on the sale of foie gras can remain in effect while producers of the delicacy challenge the constitutionality of the law, according to a federal judge. The U.S. District Judge denied the request by Canadian and American foie Gras producers for an order to halt enforcement of the law that went into effect July 1 at a hearing in Los Angeles, and stated he would explain his reasons in a written ruling later, reported Bloomberg Businessweek. The retailer's move into the New York City area has faced opposition from labor unions and some politicians, who think it would hurt local businesses. The study found that mothers typically now carry out three 'big' supermarket shops each month. A typical mother also visits a convenience store or corner shop a further seven times a month in order to top up, and almost nine in 10 moms claim there are some weeks where they have to go shopping for food items every single day, reported Daily Mail. Multi-national retailers such as Walmart, Carrefour and Tesco will now be able to buy up to a 51% stake in India's multi-brand retailers. Companies will have to invest at least $100 million, open outlets only in towns with a population of more than one million and source at least 30% of produce from India, according to reports, reported BBC News. The new service, an iPhone and iPod Touch app coupled with a free credit card reader/swipe or $100 durable smartphone case with built-in swipe, allows businesses to accept credit card payments at a lower rate than other providers. Groupon will charge 1.8% of the purchase price for transactions on Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards, plus a 15-cent fee per swipe. Sara Lee is hoping its machine that makes cups of coffee from freshly ground beans can help turn the company around, the company's CEO Michiel Herkemij stated in an interview. Orders from retailers for the system, called Sarista, have been double Sara Lee spinoff D.E Master Blenders' expectations, according to the CEO. One app, Spangler Candy's "Dum Dums Lick-A-Pop," cost less than $10,000 to develop, beneath the price of four 30-second TV spots during Saturday morning cartoons, reported The Wall Street Journal. USDA is buying meat again from a Central California slaughterhouse at the center of an animal cruelty investigation, according to The Associated Press. A statement from USDA claims that Central Valley Meat's improved oversight for animal welfare prompted the government to reinstate purchases for federal feeding programs. Officials with the Food Safety and Inspection Service concluded last week that there was no evidence of sick cattle entering the food supply. Full Story

Opponents of federal efforts to promote popcorn around the world claim the program is wasteful, as the popcorn industry is successful internationally and domestically. Each American consumes an average of 52 quarts of popcorn each year, and U.S. popcorn exports topped 232 million pounds last year for a total value of $78 million. The Popcorn Board, created by an act of Congress in 1996, expects to spend nearly a half-million dollars on international promotion and will target trade shows, school classrooms and primary household food buyers, typically women ages 18-54 with children at home, reported McClatchy Newspapers. The 2012 California farm real estate values are $7,200 per acre on average, an all-time record and $300 above the previous high set last year, according to the NASS Field Office. California annual farm real estate values have continually increased since 1994. All cropland, at $9,810 per acre, was up $360 per acre from last year. The average value of pastureland, at $2,800 per acre, was equal to the previous year, reported Western Farm Press. Full Story

´Ü¼ö¼ö´Â ¹ÙÀÌ¿À ¿¡³ÊÁö¿¡ ÀûÇÕÇÑ Æ¯¼ºÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Ù. Sweet sorghum has attributes that could make it uniquely suited to production as a bioenergy crop, ARS studies suggest. Sorghum is an ideal candidate because of its drought tolerance, adaptability to diverse growing conditions, low nitrogen fertilizer requirements, and high biomass (plant material) content. It also produces soluble sugar that can be converted to biofuel. Residual fibers left over from the juice extraction process also can be burned to generate electricity. Full Story

Peruvian asparagus volumes will likely drop while Mexican volumes rise this fall, stated an asparagus and avocado salesman for The Giumarra Cos. Increased demand from the processing side should cut into fresh volumes from Peru, while in Mexico, plantings are up substantially in some parts of the Baja and Obregon growing regions, reported The Packer Online. California farmers expect to have a good crop of rice this year, although yields may not be as remarkable as they would like, given the late start to planting this spring. A small percentage of fields are already harvested, but the good majority of farms will be starting this week and likely run into November, according to University of California Cooperative Extension farm advisors. Rice yields are being deemed "somewhat average" to "average" on less acreage, and little problems with fungal diseases and pests are being reported, according to Ag Alert.
