Red Lobster plans to revamp its menu on Oct. 15 to include more dishes that appeal to diners who do not want to eat seafood, according to The Associated Press. The chain is also boosting the number of dishes that it offers for less than $15 to appeal to customers who have cut back on spending. In a survey in which 10,554 Zagat readers weighed in on everything from their favorite burger and fries to salad and fast food chain, Wendy's was ranked the top overall chain after taking the No. 1 position for both food and decor, and taking the second-place spot for service. The main losses are connected to the production of fresh produce, with 20% of the fresh produce lost due to: accidental damage during threshing or fruit picking, damage by insects, mechanical damage and/or spillage during harvest operation and crops sorted out post-harvest following quality requirements by supermarkets and other companies. Moderate drinking could increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder, in older adults with heart disease or advanced diabetes, according to a new study. Moderate drinking was defined as up to two drinks per day or one to 14 drinks per week for women. For men, moderate drinking was three drinks per day or one to 21 drinks per week. Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that affects about 2.7 million people in the U.S., and is a risk factor for stroke, HealthDay reports. Full Story

Consumers can use the form to report illnesses, allergic reactions, injuries, improper labeling and issues with foreign objects to the Consumer Complaint Monitoring System (CCMS). Once an incident is reported to CCMS, the agency can determine what public health implications are associated with the incident, and on a case-by-case basis may conduct additional follow up with complainants. Some 20% of 127 weight loss and immune-boosting supplements investigators purchased online and in retail stores carried labels that made illegal claims to cure or treat disease, with some products stating that the supplements could cure or prevent diabetes or cancer, or that they could help people with HIV or AIDS, reported the Associated Press. Final approval of a proposed $7.25 billion legal settlement over credit card "swipe fees" could be in jeopardy, or at least delayed, as six of the 19 plaintiffs in the case now oppose the deal reached in mid-July. The six retail organizations claim the agreement does not prevent Visa and MasterCard from increasing swipe fees whenever they want. "There is strong concern that the proposed settlement agreement will not achieve the litigation's most critical goal – to fundamentally change a broken marketplace in which swipe fees are set," stated the president of the National Restaurant Association, reported NBCNews.com. But U.S. agricultural economists are dismissing reports of a global bacon shortage. "Pork supplies will decrease slightly as we go into 2013," Farm Bureau economist John Anderson stated. The study provides the first-ever global projection of the potential reduction in the maximum size of fish in a warmer and less-oxygenated ocean. The researchers used computer modeling to study more than 600 species of fish from oceans around the world and found that the maximum body weight they can reach could decline by 14% to 20% between years 2000 and 2050, with the tropics being one of the most impacted regions, reported Science Daily. The paper, authored by a research professor at the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources at Washington State University, found GE crops led to a 404 million-lb. increase in overall pesticide use since their introduction in 1996 through 2011, reported NBCNews.com. Nearly all the beef eaten in Hawaii, or 95%, arrives packaged on container ships from the U.S. mainland, according to The Associated Press. At the same time, Hawaii cattle ranchers ship 40,000 live cattle each year to California, Kansas and other states, while just 4,000 are slaughtered for meat sales in Hawaii. National interest in locally grown food and grass-fed beef have caught on in Hawaii, offering ranchers plenty of reason to get out of this paradox.
