The diner-style chain and regional partner Saleh Bin Lahej Group plan to open 40 restaurants starting next year across the United Arab Emirates, a seven-state federation that includes the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Full-Service Restaurants industry in the UK has endured a difficult time during the past five years, according to IBISWorld. The economic downturn has caused many consumers to cut back on discretionary spending such as dining out, trading down to cheaper take-away options or choosing to cook at home instead. Other factors that have put downward pressure on industry growth include several changes in government regulation and policy concerning wage costs, anti-smoking legislation, alcohol tax and food safety laws. This has forced several struggling operators to exit the industry but for some it has presented opportunities to expand operations. Full Story

Investors are hoping to see a rebound in profit from operations in China when Yum Brands reports its fiscal third-quarter earnings after the Oct. 9 closing bell, according to The Associated Press. The owner of the Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC chains had traditionally gotten a boost from increased Chinese demand, but that streak ended in the second quarter when adjusted operating profit at its Chinese operations fell 4%. QSR Á¶»ç°á°ú¿¡ µû¸£¸é, À¢µð½ºÀÇ drive-thru ÁÖ¹®½Ã°£ÀÌ °¡Àå ªÀº129.75Ãʸ¦ ³ªÅ¸³Â´Ù. Wendy's was found to have the shortest average service time for drive-thru orders (129.75 seconds) by the 2012 QSR Drive-Thru Study, followed by Taco Bell (149.69 seconds) and regional selection Bojangles (171.61 seconds). Speed did not improve for any chain compared with last year except Wendy's, largely because menu proliferation has possibly increased average service time, according to the SVP of of communications at Wendy's. Burger King also posted the lowest rate of order accuracy at 83% while Chick-fil-A was No. 1 with a 92.4% rate, reported QSR Magazine. Full Story

China's retail sales growth slowed during the Golden Week break, but demand was better than expected, and authorities provided a snapshot of increasingly important sources of demand in the world's second-largest economy. The Golden Week holiday at the start of October, when millions of people travel and spend more than usual, brings huge discounts and promotions as retailers battle for market share. Overall retail sales grew 15% during the National Day holiday, which coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival to provide a rare eight-day break. Hershey will put more emphasis on fall candy packaging and less on Halloween-themed wrapping to avoid an oversupply of Halloween products that had to be sharply discounted last year, hurting its profit margins during the busiest period of the year for the candy industry. Candy makers get about 7% of their annual sales during Halloween, according to the National Confectioners Association. Halloween candy sales will rise about 1% to $2.38 billion this year. Hershey has 10 new candies out for this season, including the Halloween-focused Cadbury Screme Egg, a version of the popular candy it sells during Easter, reported The Wall Street Journal. The UN now states its 2009 announcement that 1 billion people in the world were hungry was off-target and that the number is actually more like 870 million, according to The Associated Press. FAO issued its 2012 state of food insecurity report, and its core point was to set the record straight about the number of the world's undernourished people, applying the more accurate data retroactively back to 1990. The good news, FAO stated, is that the number of hungry people has actually been declining steadily, rather than increasing, over the past two decades, although progress has slowed since the 2007-2008 food crises and the global economic downturn, reported Bloomberg Businessweek. Food prices are likely to rise after farmers in England and Wales reported poor harvests due to the rainy summer. Wheat yields fell 14.1% this year on a five-year average to levels last seen in the late 1980s, according to a survey by the National Farmers' Union. The figures have been released after the wettest summer in England and Wales for 100 years, with 14.25in (362mm) of rain falling in June, July and August. Fresh produce is expected to post holiday sales and unit growth of 4.6% and 3.7%, respectively, while traditionally popular holiday food categories including nuts (7.5% dollar growth and 15.1% unit growth) and jams/jellies/spreads (7.1% dollar and 1.1% unit growth expected) could perform well. Coffee will lead all beverages with 10% dollar and 7% unit growth, but bottled water could have above-average dollar (4.4%) and unit (3.8%) growth as well. Full Story

PepsiCo recently reached a deal with a local Myanmar company to begin distributing several key brands there, including Pepsi-Cola, after a 15-year absence. Coca-Cola also is planning to re-enter Myanmar after 60 years of waiting. Multinational fast food chains are expected to follow. Myanmar last year and began rolling out economic and political reforms, including the release of many well-known political prisoners, reported The Wall Street Journal. Kraft Foods Group is reportedly putting its Breakstone's sour cream and cottage cheese business up for sale, claimed people with knowledge of the situation. The business may be worth about $400 million. Dairy producer Grupo Lala SA of Mexico is claimed to be interested in Breakstone's and Dean Foods' Morningstar, reported Bloomberg.com. Full Story

Kraft Foods will sell Maxwell House and Gevalia K-cup single-serve coffee pods compatible with Keurig brewing systems sometime in the next several months. The pods are not licensed by Keurig or affiliated in any way after Keurig parent Green Mountain Coffee Roasters lost patent rights to the K-Cup in September, and the company will not see receive any royalties from the sale of Maxwell House cups. Maxwell House is the third-largest retail coffee brand in the U.S. behind Folgers and Starbucks, according to Euromonitor International, reported Reuters. Full Story

Drinking three or more cups of coffee a day is associated with an increased risk of developing glaucoma, U.S. researchers claim. A study from the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found a meta-analysis of the two groups showed participants who drank three cups or more of caffeinated coffee daily were at an increased risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma, compared to those who did not drink coffee, reported UPI.
