Walmart plans to increase its marketing, including featuring layaway commercials, ad-matching guarantees and price comparison on a basket of goods against retailers including Dollar General. It also will use Facebook and other social media to drive sales. The company's first-half sales, traffic, and market share have risen through its strategy of broadening product assortment and lowering prices. Total domestic retail sales of orange juice fell 4.8% in terms of volume and 2.1% in terms of revenue for the four weeks ended Sept. 29, versus the same period in 2011, according to Nielsen data published by the Florida Department of Citrus. The average price of orange juice has climbed 17 cents from a similar four-week period a year earlier. Sales ofreconstituted, or from-concentrate, orange juice fell even more sharply than total orange juice sales- down 10.1% in terms of volume from a similar four-week period a year earlier, despite prices shedding 0.5% to $4.98 a gallon, reported The Wall Street Journal. September non-alcoholic beverage sales in the convenience store channel ticked up about 8% year-over-year in the third quarter, according to Wells Fargo Securities. The survey showed 92% of respondents indicated that sale of non-alcoholic beverages increased year-over-year in the third quarter. The results are a marked improvement from July and August trends, explained Bonnie Herzog, managing director of beverage, tobacco and consumer research at Wells Fargo Securities, reported Convenience Store News. Publix is hoping to change that with a new marketing approach that puts them directly in competition with quick-service restaurants. Publix developed a program where customers can order a sub or sandwich online or on a smartphone and pick it up at the store. All St. Augustine area Publix stores except the Anastasia Island store are in the program, which launched in Lakeland in August and has expanded to now include 50 stores in Florida and Georgia, reported The St. Augustine Record. The two new stores will mark the eighth and ninth Manhattan locations for Whole Foods, which also has stores in TriBeCa, Chelsea, Union Square and the Upper West Side. The Upper East Side store will open in early 2014, while the Harlem store will open in the summer of 2015, company officials stated, reported The Wall Street Journal. ÆíÀÇÁ¡ÀÇ Private Brand ºñÁßÀº Ÿ À¯Åë ´ëºñ ³·°Ô ³ªÅ¸³ª°í ÀÖ´Ù. Private label penetration remains low at convenience stores compared to other retail channels, according to Nielsen. Unlike the high and growing penetration at supermarkets, drug stores and other channels, just 2.4% of c-store sales were from private label goods during the 52-week period ending Aug. 4, 2012. By contrast, private labels have accounted for 18% to 19% of supermarket sales in the past three years, and around 15% of drug store sales, reported Convenience Store News. Full Story

Archer Daniels Midland bought 10% of Australian grain company GrainCorp and is open to a bigger deal. The transaction underlined the growing appeal of Australian agricultural assets with Asian demand for food and other soft commodities expected to skyrocket. GrainCorp is the largest of Australia's listed agribusinesses, and owns about half of the grain-storage facilities in Eastern Australia. Citing a presentation of the drinks made to the Sanofi works council, the Wall Street Journal reported four Oenobiol drinks will be made of mineral water, fruit juice and nutrition additives. The finding stems from research that showed prostate patients scheduled for a type of surgery known as a prostatectomy, where the prostate is removed, reduced their levels of some disease-associated inflammation by drinking lots of brewed green tea in the weeks preceding the operation. Consumers have a much better chance to reduce their risk of cancer by eating one more serving fruit and vegetables a day than worrying about cancer risks from pesticide residues on produce, according to a study from the Produce for Better Health Foundation. The study estimated 20,000 cases of cancer per year could be prevented in the U.S. if just half of the U.S. population increased its fruit and vegetable consumption by one serving a day. The study also looked at the likely relationship between pesticide residues and cancer, and concluded the upper limit of 10 cases or less per year could result from residues, reported The Packer Online. The latest USDA reports have peanut production in the U.S. set at 3,832-lbs. per acre, which is up 446-lbs. per acre from last year. Grower-shippers say buyers should expect small gaps in the early part of the sweet corn deal and look for rains to cause slight disruptions for other crops, including green beans, bell peppers, cucumbers and squash, reported The Packer Online. The one drawback of all that heat is that the nuts lost some of their weight before harvest. According to Dave Baker, director of member relations for almond cooperative Blue Diamond, "The quality is still good, but that lower moisture content means we lost a lot of weight. Canadian apple producers introduced a new apple variety, the Salish, set to debut in select stores this fall, according to Marketwire. Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, revealed the name of the newest apple at the annual University of British Columbia Apple Festival. The Salish is tangy, juicy and very crisp. It is medium-sized, with a pinkish red blush over a yellow background color. The apple has characteristics that appeal not only to consumers, with its high quality appearance, texture and flavour, but also those that Canadian apple growers seek, such as its late harvest date, good storage and shelf life, high yields and good growth habits for high-density orchards, reported EIN.
