During the award presentation, Mr. Sullivan was noted as a man of integrity, of constant curiosity, and as an exceptional industry leader in the work he has performed through IFDA. Of note was his service as Chairman of the organization, his work as an advocate for the industry on Capitol Hill, his leadership in GS1 US Standards implementation, and his vision of improved collaboration between distributors and manufacturers. Airlines are serving more meals and offering healthier and higher-quality food choices than last year, according to a survey of food on North American airlines. Virgin America offers the healthiest food, followed by Air Canada and Alaska Airlines; Allegiant Air scored the lowest. Many snacks airlines offered last year exceeded 850 calories. Student c-store usage has grown across virtually all spending components and product dollars grew 15% over a year ago, according to the Making the Grade: Student Consumer Impact on the Retail Fuels and Convenience Marketplace report. The report, which examines how c-stores can capitalize on opportunities to attract college students, also finds that 31.9% of college students' c-store purchases are an impulse buy, compared to 22.7% of other c-store shoppers' purchases. EU marketing standards set out the specific size and shape for the 10 most consumed products including apples, pears, strawberries, citrus, table grapes, peaches, kiwifruit, lettuces tomatoes and sweet peppers. Japanese convenience store operator Circle K Sunkus plans to open its first overseas store in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur next autumn. To run the store, the company will set up a joint venture, Circle K (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, with local company Kumpulan Mofaz Sdn Bhd next month. The joint firm will be owned 30% by Circle K Sunkus and 70% by the Malaysian partner. Two and half years after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, BP agreed to pay a total of $4.5 billion in penalties and plead guilty to felony misconduct in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The money penalties include $4 billion in a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and $525 million with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Food recalls occurred at an average rate of four per day in the third quarter of 2012, according to Stericycle's quarterly ExpertRECALL Index based on FDA enforcement report data. The Enforcement Reports documented 414 food recalls in the third quarter, 2.5 times the number of recalls documented in the second quarter and the highest level in at least eight quarters. The recall activity affected nearly 8.5 million units of food and beverages, reflecting a 57% increase compared with the previous quarter, while nearly one-quarter of food and beverage companies that faced a recall in the third quarter also had more than one reported event. Washington¡¯s apple grower-shippers have stopped shipping to Indonesia, the industry's fifth-largest export market, due to new regulations. Since the end of October, Washington shippers have not exported to Indonesia because of new regulations that fruit be inspected before it's shipped, and that importers in Indonesia have a permit, stated an export marketing director for the Washington Apple Commission. In the 2011-12 season, Washington shippers sent 2.5 million bushels worth $51 million to Indonesia, making the country the fifth-largest importer of Washington apples, reported The Packer Online.
